Neerja is a 2016 Hindi-language biographical drama film directed by Ram Madhvani. She has always been an important part of our family history and we were all immensely proud of her.This movie has an incredibly powerful message. It’s not just about terrorism or hijacking – it is a reminder to everyone that we can all do something that might someday make a difference. "Neerja" is based on the biography of Neerja Bhanot, written by the journalist-writer Shivani Gupta. Bhanot was a Pan Am Flight Attendant and she died in the hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 on 17 February 1986. She has been honored by the Government of India with Padma Shri and India’s first female foreign exchange diplomat.Born in Baroda, Gujarat, Neerja Bhanot's family moved to Chandigarh when she was 10, and then to the US after her father shifted his work as a government engineer to McLean, Virginia. Her father died when she was 11; her mother worked as an engineer at NASA facilities for several years. Neerja grew up in McLean and attended the prestigious Central Missouri State University (now the University of Central Missouri) in Warrensburg; she graduated at 19 after taking a year off to work as a flight attendant with American Airlines.Bhanot obtained her FAA Airman Certificate Rating through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Pan Am Flight 73 was her first post-graduate training flight. According to Gupta's book, Bhanot was considered "the best by Pan Am." Her speciality for training was as a Certified Flight Instructor and she received high-level analysis and feedback from veteran pilots, including Captain Robert Oliver, who noticed Bhanot "has an easy way with students. She is no-nonsense, keeps the class moving ahead, and tailors her teaching to fit the students."Bhanot volunteered with St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, which provided free medical service to children in developing countries. She was particularly involved with the Pan Am Clipper Connection program, which provided medical treatment to mentally handicapped children in more than 20 Asian countries. She often traveled abroad by herself to provide medical treatment at clinics that were too remote for the parents of these children to reach on their own. During one of these trips, she met a boy who had been unable to walk since birth but received care from Bhanot that allowed him to walk again after being fitted with braces.
